On Friday, President Arif Alvi received a farewell guard of honour at Aiwan-e-Sadr, where his term ended. After the anthem, he inspected the armed forces’ contingents. Elected as the 13th president after PTI’s win, he succeeded Mamnoon Hussain on September 9, 2018.

Alvi served through varied governmental relations. He became proactive after Khan’s April 2022 ouster. Alvi initially opposed the Sharif administration. He contested legislation he claimed not to sign, including the Official Secrets and Pakistan Army Acts.

Alvi, a PTI stalwart, criticized the legal actions against Khan. His political career began unsuccessfully in Sindh’s 1997 and 2002 elections. As PTI’s secretary-general from 2006 to 2013, he won a National Assembly seat in 2013 and 2018. His father was also a dentist.

The presidential election is set for Saturday. Asif Ali Zardari and Mahmood Khan Achakzai are the contenders. The electoral college, comprising Senate, National Assembly, and provincial assemblies members, will vote. With a majority, Zardari is expected to win a second term.
