Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader Sharjeel Memon announced its intention to use “constitutional” channels to address their concerns over the recent redrawing of constituencies for the national and provincial assemblies.
PPP’s response comes after the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) released a final list of delimitations. Earlier this week, amidst speculations of a delay in general elections, the ECP notified the final list of constituency delimitations for the national and four provincial assemblies. This step is crucial for announcing the election schedule, which is expected to be in the first week of December. Initially slated for December 15, the final delimitation list publication date was revised to November 30.
According to the ECP, the National Assembly comprises 266 general seats, with 60 reserved for women and 10 for non-Muslims.
Sharjeel Memon, the former Sindh information minister, expressed the PPP’s strong objections to the new delimitations in a press conference in Karachi. He emphasized the party’s readiness to combat election rigging and criticized the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan’s (MQM-P) demands for constituency arrangements.
Memon dismissed the political impact of the MQM-P and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) alliance against the PPP in Sindh as “ineffective.” He asserted the PPP’s readiness for the upcoming elections, scheduled for February 8, 2024, confident of their victory.
Memon highlighted the PPP’s approach to avoiding politics of hatred and expressed willingness for collaboration while being ready to respond to any political attacks against the party. He criticized the PML-N for focusing primarily on Lahore and emphasized the PPP’s nationwide representation and commitment to practical work and development across Pakistan, not just in slogans.
Memon questioned the PML-N’s development efforts outside Lahore and reaffirmed the PPP’s position as a beacon of hope for the people, confident of securing a majority in the upcoming elections.
