The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) has seemingly softened its previously rigid demand for general elections within a strict 90-day timeframe. Instead, the party is now emphasizing the necessity for polls to be conducted “according to the Constitution,” steering clear of explicitly mentioning the 90-day deadline, which had been a focal point in previous discussions.
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari articulated this new approach during a series of meetings with notable party leaders, where he underscored that adhering to the constitutional path was crucial in addressing the myriad challenges currently facing the nation. Mr. Khuhro, who had earlier insisted on the 90-day timeframe, also aligned with this adjusted stance, highlighting the supremacy of the Constitution over the Elections Act, 2017. He noted that the recent delimitation plan would not significantly impact the assembly seat structure, therefore not presenting a valid reason to extend the electoral timeline.
Preparing for the Polls: A Focus on Grassroots Campaigning and Addressing Economic Issues
While adapting their stance on the election timeline, the PPP has reaffirmed their commitment to actively participating in the upcoming elections. Chairman Bhutto-Zardari urged party units to spearhead dynamic and extensive door-to-door campaigns, with a special emphasis on encouraging the active involvement of women in the democratic process to foster better electoral results.
Furthermore, the party is keenly assessing the decisions made by the caretaker government, especially those that potentially hinder welfare projects in Sindh. Former Chief Minister, Mr. Shah, brought to the chairman’s attention several decisions by the caretaker government that have halted subsidies and frozen funds designated for critical development projects and healthcare institutions in Sindh. The PPP appears poised to critique these moves as they gear up for spirited participation in the impending polls, fostering a comprehensive dialogue on the nation’s political and economic issues.
