Due to outstanding electricity bills, K-electric (KE) has cut off power for numerous Pakistan Railway colonies and installations. Karachi’s only electricity provider reported that Pakistan Railways has an unpaid balance of Rs430 million across 31 connections. The company indicated that maintaining power without settling these dues is unfeasible.
A KE spokesperson mentioned that despite several reminders and promises, payments are still overdue. Nasir Khalili, Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways in Karachi, noted the worsening dispute has led to power disruptions at critical installations and colonies.
These power outages have significantly disrupted train services, halting online ticket bookings and impacting the operation of 38 passenger trains departing daily from Karachi. Khalili pointed out that the Karachi division contributes Rs50-60 million daily revenue to the Railways.
He also stated that KE owes the Railways Rs70 billion in unpaid dues over the last decade. Khalili cautioned that if the power issues continue, the Railways might consider withholding payments to KE.
Previously, KE announced it would resume power if the railway authorities provided assurances to clear the outstanding debts and ensure regular monthly payments. However, the company noted, “Despite accommodating Pakistan Railways, these commitments have been repeatedly dishonoured.”
