Recent Testing Reveals Poliovirus in Karachi and Peshawar Sewage
Recent tests have identified poliovirus in sewage samples from Karachi’s Kemari area and Peshawar.
Sample data collected on June 3rd and 4th were positive for wild poliovirus type 1 and vaccine-derived poliovirus types 2 and 3.
In 2024, 185 samples from all four provinces of Pakistan tested positive for the poliovirus, and 45 districts reported instances of the disease.
So far this year, five polio cases have been confirmed in Pakistan, with one child sadly succumbing to the virus.
Pakistan and Afghanistan are currently the only countries where polio remains endemic, continuing to pose significant health challenges.
