Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N ) has announced to challenge former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s conviction in the Avenfield case before the Islamabad High Court (IHC)
After the acquittal of Maryam Nawaz by the high court, a party session led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has resolved to appeal Nawaz Sharif’s sentencing in the accountability reference to the IHC, according to sources.
It has also been decided that Maryam Nawaz will return from London before the PML-N leader’s arrival, and once Nawaz Sharif is announced, he will return from London. However, PMLN leaders claimed that Nawaz Sharif will return to Pakistan in January.
The Islamabad High Court (IHC), on September 29, 2022, acquitted PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz and her husband, Captain retired Safdar, by nullifying the judgment handed down by a court of accountability in the Avenfield reference.
Justices Aamir Farooq and Mohsin Akhtar Kiyani of the IHC’s Divisional Bench announced the reserved judgment after hearing arguments from both parties.
In the Avenfield case, an accountability court sentenced Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison and an $8 million fine on July 6, 2018. Maryam was also sentenced to seven years in prison and fined £2 million, while her husband, Safdar, received a sentence of one year.
