Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced an early end to his government’s tenure, despite previous statements hinting towards its completion. During a laptop distribution ceremony at the Government College Women’s University in Sialkot, Sharif stated, “Next month, our government will complete its tenure. We will leave before the completion of our tenure, and an interim government will come.” This signals a departure from his earlier suggestion that the coalition government’s tenure would end on August 14, and subsequent elections would be announced by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) in “October or November”.
Implications of Dissolving the National Assembly and Laptop Distribution
Sharif’s recent declaration hints that the current government is not considering dissolving the National Assembly before its expiry on August 14. Following the end of the National Assembly’s constitutional tenure, general elections are usually held after 60 days. However, if the lower house of parliament is dissolved before its term ends, the election date can be extended to 90 days from the dissolution.
Additionally, Sharif announced that his government would distribute 100,000 laptops in the fiscal year 2023-24, with current distributions being from the fiscal year 2022-23. He thanked Finance Minister Ishaq Dar for permitting the laptop imports, ensuring they were allocated based on merit.
The Promise of Progress under PML-N’s Leadership
PM Shehbaz emphasized his party’s commitment to the country’s advancement by promising progress and prosperity if given another opportunity. During a cheque distribution ceremony in Lahore, he praised the leadership qualities of Nawaz Sharif, lamenting his ousting despite significant achievements, including ending long hours of load-shedding, providing laptops and loans to youth, and initiating the multi-billion-dollar China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CEPC) power and road infrastructure projects in 2015.
PM Shehbaz also criticized PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s tenure, stating it was marked with significant corruption scams and unproven corruption allegations.
