Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has approved the construction of Hyderabad-Sukkur motorway.

The decision about the mega-project was made at a meeting with Chairman National Highway Authority (NHA) Shahid Ashraf, who gave him a comprehensive briefing on the status of ongoing and future development projects across the country.

The project is part of the comprehensive development plan recently approved by the Prime Minister during a marathon meeting of cabinet members held in Murree recently. Sharif has embarked on announcing such projects after facing mounting criticisms after the Panama Papers.

The premier was informed that infrastructure development projects worth Rs.1000 billion including the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) were currently underway and most of the projects will be completed by 2018.

Sharif also announced that he will perform ground breaking of Sialkot-Lahore motorway in the last week of this month. The 91-kilometre long project has been approved at a cost of Rs52.7 bn.

He said that the network of motorways will generate jobs opportunities, speed up development and increase the economic growth of Pakistan as well regional connectivity. He was adamant that there will no compromise on governance based on transparency and efficiency which is the vision of the government
