Sony Interactive Entertainment will stop producing PlayStation physical discs for all new games released from January 2028, shifting new PlayStation console titles to digital distribution.
All new PlayStation titles launched after the deadline will be available in digital formats through the PlayStation Store and participating retailers, according to PlayStation.Blog.
The change will not affect games already released on physical discs. Sony said the policy also excludes titles scheduled for disc release before January 2028.
The company said the decision reflects changing consumer habits and wider entertainment industry trends.
Sony described the move as a natural evolution in how players now access and play games. The company said the transition would allow it to focus resources on game accessibility and broader purchasing options.
Those options will include the PlayStation Store and retail channels. Sony also reiterated its commitment to a high-quality gaming experience and thanked PlayStation users for their continued support.
