WASHINGTON: The Pennsylvania House race in the 1st Congressional District pits Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick against Democrat Bob Harvie as Fitzpatrick highlights policy disagreements with President Donald Trump.
Fitzpatrick has opposed Trump on tariffs, tax legislation and presidential authority to continue military operations against Iran without congressional approval. He also skipped Trump’s recent Republican midterm convention, the Associated Press reported.
Harvie, a former social studies teacher and twice-elected county commissioner, has emphasised his local ties and concerns about public trust in government. The Federal Election Commission lists him as the Democratic challenger for Pennsylvania’s 1st District.
The district has produced substantial split-ticket voting in recent elections. Fitzpatrick won reelection by about 13 percentage points in 2024 even as Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris narrowly carried the district, AP reported.

In addition, Fitzpatrick has consistently outperformed Democratic presidential candidates in the district. He won by about 10 points in 2022. He also won by roughly 13 points in 2020, when Joe Biden carried the district by about five points.
Campaign finance records show Fitzpatrick’s authorised committee spent about $4.8 million from January 2025 through June 30, 2026 and had approximately $6.36 million in cash on hand at the end of that period.

Harvie’s committee reported about $2 million in receipts and $1.21 million in spending through June 30, with nearly $795,000 remaining in cash.

The campaigns have also clashed over advertisements alleging that Harvie was under FBI investigation. Harvie denies the claim and has filed a federal defamation lawsuit against a super PAC involved in the advertising; the FBI did not comment to AP.
