Pakistan’s javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem is poised to compete in the Men’s Javelin Throw qualifying round at the Paris Olympics 2024 today, Tuesday.
Nadeem is scheduled to participate in the qualifiers alongside notable competitors such as India’s Neeraj Chopra. The Olympic organizers assigned both athletes to Group B.
The qualifying event starts at 2:50 PM Pakistan Standard Time (PST), and Nadeem will make his throw fifth in the sequence. Several high-ranking athletes are also competing in Group B, including Edis Matusevicius, who is currently fifth in the world rankings; Anderson Peters, who is ranked sixth; and Germany’s Max Dehning, who has achieved throws exceeding 90 meters this year.
An athlete must achieve a minimum throw of 84 meters to advance to the final round. The final will feature 12 athletes competing for medals. Should fewer than 12 athletes reach the 84-meter mark, those with the best throws below this distance will advance to the final round. This qualification round is critical as it will determine the lineup for Thursday’s Men’s Javelin Throw final.
Arshad Nadeem, a beacon of hope for Pakistan, secured a silver medal at the World Championship in 2023 and a silver at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. He also made history by winning a gold medal, becoming the first Pakistani to do so since 1962. Notably, Pakistan’s last Olympic medal was a bronze in field hockey at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
