RAWALPINDI: England white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum has urged his players to adapt quickly during the Pakistan tri-series, warning that reaching the final requires their best cricket against the hosts and Sri Lanka.
England begin their One-Day International (ODI) campaign against Pakistan at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. They face Sri Lanka at the same venue on Thursday.
McCullum described both opponents as strong sides and identified local conditions as a particular challenge. Facing subcontinent teams on familiar territory required England to adjust how they approached each contest, he said.
However, he rejected a fixed formula for success. England’s priority was to respond to the match as it unfolded rather than follow a rigid method. “We want to be a team that can compete in all conditions.”
For McCullum, that ambition meant preparing for different challenges within the same tournament. Switching between Pakistan and Sri Lanka would test how quickly his players could assess their opponents and respond. He viewed that variety as an opportunity.

While respecting both sides’ strength, McCullum wanted England to embrace the demands of competing away from home. He argued that their ability to adjust would determine whether they gave themselves a chance to qualify.
On returning to Pakistan, the former New Zealand captain praised the hospitality England had received during previous visits. He recalled competitive cricket and acknowledged that his side had won and lost against the hosts.
McCullum welcomed the weather and playing conditions, adding that England were pleased to be back in the country. His comments focused on the challenge of producing their best cricket rather than prescribing one way to play.
After the Rawalpindi fixtures, England’s campaign moves to Lahore. They meet Pakistan again on October 25 before facing Sri Lanka on October 29 at Gaddafi Stadium.
Each side plays the other two teams twice, and the top two qualify for the deciding match. The final is scheduled for October 31 in Lahore.
