On August 16, 2025, New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon joined a vibrant Pakistan Independence Day celebration in Auckland, where nearly 1,000 Pakistani Kiwis participated. The Pakistan Association of New Zealand (PANZ), supported by the Pakistan High Commission and local businesses, organized the event. Guests enjoyed a flag-hoisting ceremony, cultural performances, and poetry recitals.

Luxon congratulated Pakistan on its 78th Independence Day, commending the contributions of the Kiwi Pakistani community to New Zealand’s development and the strong bilateral relationships between the two countries. Opposition Leader Chris Hipkins supported this sentiment, emphasising the community’s significant role in Kiwi society. Pakistan’s High Commissioner, Faisal Aziz Ahmed, presented Pakistan-made shawls to dignitaries as a gesture of goodwill.

Dr. Asif Khan, President of the Pakistan Association of New Zealand (PANZ), highlighted the organisation’s community initiatives and emphasised the need for a strategic partnership between Pakistan and New Zealand. The event also launched PANZ’s interactive website, which aims to enhance community engagement. This celebration was part of nationwide events and showcased the cultural pride and integration of the Kiwi Pakistani diaspora.

The presence of Luxon, Minister Mark Mitchell, and other MPs marked a significant gesture of goodwill, reinforcing Pakistan-New Zealand relations. The celebration could foster deeper diplomatic and cultural collaboration. New Zealand’s PM attending Pakistan’s Independence Day event strengthens bilateral ties and celebrates the contributions of the Kiwi Pakistani community.
