Pakistan has established a comprehensive strategy to significantly increase meat exports to Malaysia, setting an ambitious target of $200 million over the next three to five years. The government will grant formal industry status to the halal meat sector to facilitate this expansion and strengthen the national economy.

A high-level committee meeting jointly chaired by key federal ministers finalised the meat export plan aligned with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s economic vision. The comprehensive business model represents a major advancement in Pakistan’s international halal meat market presence.

This initiative aims to dramatically increase exports from the current level of $38,000 in buffalo meat shipments to Malaysia, representing substantial growth potential for Pakistan’s livestock sector.

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Haroon Akhtar Khan announced that granting industry status to the halal meat sector will provide crucial structural support for export growth. He confirmed the development of a practical business plan with specific timelines and responsibilities assigned to all stakeholders.

Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan emphasised the importance of financial facilitation, noting that banking institutions, provincial and federal governments, and the State Bank of Pakistan will collaborate to reduce export costs and provide necessary incentives.

Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain confirmed that modern slaughterhouses meeting Malaysian standards will be established to ensure compliance and maximise trade potential. This infrastructure development addresses critical requirements for international market access.

The committee identified several challenges requiring resolution, including foot and mouth disease control, processing facility improvements, and logistical enhancements. These measures collectively position Pakistan to achieve its substantial export growth targets in the international halal meat market.
