OpenAI removes older ChatGPT models from its main interface as part of a major platform update scheduled for February 13, 2026. The company confirmed that users will no longer see options such as GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, GPT-4.1 mini, and OpenAI o4-mini inside the ChatGPT interface.

The decision also covers GPT-5 Instant and GPT-5 Thinking variants. However, OpenAI will continue to support these legacy models through its API for now.

OpenAI announced the changes as part of its broader effort to streamline model offerings and focus on newer systems.

OpenAI Removes Older ChatGPT Models as GPT-5.2 Becomes Default

When OpenAI removes older ChatGPT models, existing conversations will automatically shift to newer systems such as GPT-5.2. Users will not need to manually migrate chats.

Saved conversations and custom applications will continue to function. However, the underlying model powering those chats will change. This shift ensures continuity while allowing OpenAI to consolidate its technology stack.

The company acknowledged that some users valued GPT-4o for its tone and emotional warmth. According to OpenAI, user feedback influenced the personality refinements in newer models.

What Changes for ChatGPT Users?

As of February 13, 2026, ChatGPT users will no longer be able to manually select GPT-4.0 or GPT-4.1 in the interface. Instead, the platform will default to GPT-5.2 or a later version.

Importantly, developers who rely on the API will retain access to older models for the time being. This distinction separates consumer-facing interface changes from backend developer tools.

The update simplifies the model selection experience. At the same time, it allows OpenAI to reduce infrastructure costs tied to maintaining multiple legacy systems.

Why OpenAI Is Retiring Legacy Models

Technology companies regularly phase out older systems to improve performance and efficiency. In this case, OpenAI aims to prioritise faster, smarter, and more capable AI systems.

By retiring legacy ChatGPT models, the company can focus its engineering resources on advanced features, improved reasoning, and refined customisation.

Still, some long-time users have expressed disappointment. GPT-4 earned praise for its conversational warmth and emotional engagement. As a result, the transition may feel abrupt for users who preferred that style.

Nevertheless, OpenAI maintains that newer models incorporate lessons learned from previous versions.

The retirement of GPT-4o and related models highlights a broader shift in generative AI. Companies increasingly replace older models with more advanced iterations that deliver improved speed and contextual understanding.

This cycle reflects rapid innovation in the AI sector. While some users may miss familiar systems, the industry continues to evolve rapidly. For now, the key takeaway remains clear: OpenAI will remove older ChatGPT models from the interface in February 2026, but API access will remain available temporarily.
