Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) on Thursday announced a significant oil and gas discovery at the Nashpa Block in Kohat district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In an official statement, OGDCL said it had achieved successful production from the Baragzai X-1 exploratory well. The output was 4,100 barrels of oil per day and 10.5 million cubic feet of gas per day. The company said the discovery would strengthen both national energy reserves and its own resource base.
The well was drilled to a total depth of 5,170 metres. A 187-metre hydrocarbon-bearing zone was identified within the Datta Formation. A cased-hole drill stem test confirmed the well’s commercial viability. It recorded production at a 32/64-inch choke and a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,880 pounds per square inch gauge.
OGDCL operates the Nashpa exploration licence with a 65 per cent working interest. Pakistan Petroleum Limited holds a 30 per cent stake. Meanwhile, Government Holdings Private Limited owns the remaining 5 per cent, according to a company spokesperson.
The company said the discovery would help improve Pakistan’s energy supply-demand balance. This is by increasing domestic production and reducing reliance on expensive oil and gas imports. Officials added that developing local resources remains a key priority amid persistent energy challenges.

An earlier find at the Baragzai X-01 (Slant) exploratory well had already underscored the Nashpa Block’s potential. In December 2025, OGDCL announced that the well was producing 2,280 barrels of oil per day. It also produced 5.6 million standard cubic feet of gas per day. That discovery marked the first hydrocarbon find from the Kingriali Formation in the area.
Officials spudded the Baragzai X-01 well on December 24, 2024, and drilled it to 5,170 meters. They stated that this success de-risks deeper exploration and opens discovery prospects across the region.

Experts widely believe Pakistan holds significant potential in tight and shale gas resources trapped in dense rock formations. These resources demand advanced drilling techniques. Yet, large-scale commercial production remains unestablished.
OGDCL’s renewed exploration push follows remarks by U.S. President Donald Trump, who claimed Pakistan held “massive” oil reserves. Energy analysts have said those claims lack credible geological backing.
