In a startling revelation from a quaint town in the Netherlands, an octogenarian was found to have kept his late father’s body frozen at home for a year and a half to cope with the loss.
The local Dutch news outlet, 1Limburg, broke the story first.
The authorities discovered the preserved body in Landgraaf, inside a residential property on Mansholtstraat.
According to the police, the 82-year-old son had stored his father, who died naturally at 101, in his freezer for about 18 months.
“I couldn’t bear to let him go. I would feel his absence deeply,” the man admitted. He had opted to keep his father in the freezer so that he could “continue their conversations.”
Despite the son being a person of interest in the case of concealing his father’s body, the police have stated they do not suspect any criminal activity associated with the father’s death.
“There’s no indication of criminal behavior,” a police representative assured 1Limburg.
The situation came to light when the deceased man’s physician became worried about his patient’s well-being and notified law enforcement. Upon their arrival at the son’s home, the police discovered the preserved body.
The police are examining the precise conditions surrounding the centenarian’s death and the son’s unusual choice to store his body in a freezer. They are also working to establish the exact time of death.
A comparable situation unfolded a few years ago in Limburg city when a man preserved his mother’s body in his home for over two years, during which he received her pension and other benefits. He was later legally obligated to return 40,000 euros.
