North Korea’s state media, KCNA, reported the detention of shipyard officials linked to a major accident during the launch of a 5,000-tonne warship in Chongjin.
The failed launch, witnessed by leader Kim Jong Un, caused significant damage to the vessel and sparked public embarrassment for the regime.
The incident occurred at the northeastern port of Chongjin, likely in front of a large audience gathered to witness North Korea’s display of military strength. Kim Jong Un, who attended the event, condemned the mishap as a blow to the nation’s dignity. He vowed to hold those responsible accountable, according to KCNA. Experts suggest the public nature of the failure amplified the humiliation for Kim, who has prioritised showcasing military advancements amid tensions with the United States.
