San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa will miss several weeks after suffering a calf injury on Thursday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan gave the estimate on Friday without setting a return date.
Bosa hurt himself while warming up before the team’s walkthrough. He will miss Sunday’s game against the Arizona Cardinals.
“We can’t say exactly, but I’m guessing around a few weeks,” Shanahan said.
San Francisco is leaning against placing Bosa on injured reserve, ESPN reported. Limited opportunities to bring injured players back during the season are influencing that consideration.
National Football League rules allow teams eight return designations from injured reserve during the regular season. Several 49ers players already on the list are potential return candidates.
Shanahan described losing six of the team’s 10 defensive linemen over two weeks as unusual in his coaching experience.
Bosa had played 70 snaps across the opening two games after returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. He suffered that injury against Arizona in Week 3 last season.
