Sindh Minister for Excise, Mukesh Kumar Chawla, has issued a directive stating that after April 3, only vehicles with new Ajrak-designed number plates will be recognized across the province. Chawla, who oversees taxation and narcotics control, announced this during a key implementation meeting.
High-ranking officials,, including Secretary Excise Muhammad Saleem Rajput, DIG Traffic Police Karachi Ahmed Nawaz, representatives from the National Highway Authority (NHA), Safe City officers, and other relevant personnel, attended the meeting.
Chawla received a comprehensive briefing from Secretary Rajput and DIG Nawaz during the meeting. He emphasized the need to develop a joint action plan for enforcing motor vehicle tax and traffic rule violations, including implementing fines.
Chawla proposed the introduction of counter desks for traffic police at the Civic Center and Excise Department Facilitation Centers to facilitate a one-window operation. He also assured the timely distribution of new number plates at traffic police check posts.
Further, he instructed that traffic police personnel should continue to be deployed at road checkpoints. He advocated for collaborative efforts in integrating traffic challans with motor vehicle registration (MVR) taxes and assisted each other with collecting these dues.
Additionally, Chawla highlighted the role of the Excise Department in supporting the traffic police by maintaining records of outstanding challans. He insisted that vehicle transfer and tax payments should be contingent upon the clearance of any pending challans.
The minister also pointed out that joint efforts and enhancing the online system would expedite the identification and clearance of pending MVR taxes and traffic challans, enabling them to be settled from a single point. He directed the Sindh Excise Secretary to draft a proposal to implement these measures effectively.
