Netflix has revealed the first official image from Steve, an upcoming feature film starring Cillian Murphy as the titular character. The role is poised to deliver another emotionally charged performance from the Oppenheimer star. Directed by Tim Mielants, the film is slated for a limited theatrical release in September 2025 and will stream globally on Netflix starting October 3, 2025.

Adapted from Max Porter’s acclaimed novel Shy, Steve reimagines the story for the screen, focusing on a pivotal day in the life of Steve, a head teacher at a failing reform school. As he fights to keep the institution afloat, Steve grapples with personal demons that threaten to overwhelm him. The narrative explores themes of education, redemption, and the toll of institutional collapse, brought to life through raw performances and powerful storytelling.

Here's your first look at Cillian Murphy in the upcoming film STEVE. Also starring Jay Lycurgo, Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo, and Emily Watson.

Cillian Murphy, who also produces, leads a talented ensemble. Jay Lycurgo plays Shy, a troubled teen navigating his past and uncertain future, while Tracey Ullman, Simbi Ajikawo (Top Boy), and Emily Watson (Small Things Like These) round out the cast. Max Porter, the novel’s author, adapted the screenplay and is an executive producer, collaborating with Murphy’s production company and producer Alan Moloney. The film’s haunting score, composed by Ben Salisbury and Geoff Barrow, enhances its emotional depth.

Steve adds to an eventful 2025 for Murphy, who will also reprise his iconic role as Tommy Shelby in the Peaky Blinders film later this year. His dual role as actor and producer in Steve underscores his commitment to bold, character-driven stories, positioning the film as a must-watch for fans and critics alike.
