BAGHDAD: Iraq’s ambassador to Tehran said Najaf International Airport will resume Iranian flights within 24 hours after a service suspension.
Yasser Abdul-Zahra al-Hajjaj said the airport would again receive flights from Iran within the stated timeframe.
The suspension had drawn criticism from Iraqi political, factional and religious figures. They called on authorities to reverse the decision and objected to US pressure on Iranian aviation.
Separately, Iran has filed a formal complaint with the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) over US restrictions on its aviation sector.
Abouzar Shiroudi, head of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organisation, said on Monday that the complaint followed consultations with the Foreign Ministry.

He said Tehran planned to use diplomatic and legal channels to restore affected air routes. The dispute follows new US pressure on companies that provide services to Iranian airlines.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on September 21 that Iranian carriers could effectively be forced to stop operating internationally from September 23. He linked that outcome to secondary sanctions targeting aviation service providers.
Najaf International Airport had previously suspended flights to and from Iran before the ambassador announced the expected resumption.
