ISLAMABAD: Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on Thursday that Pakistan’s political system had failed and urged political parties to agree on fundamental reforms, including new provinces and administrative units.

Addressing the Pakistan Economic Summit 2026 in Islamabad, Naqvi said the existing system had failed to deliver for 70 to 80 years. He warned that Pakistan would face the same problems after another decade without structural change.

Naqvi described himself as a supporter of democracy but said democratic governance could operate under different models. He cited Pakistan’s wheat imports despite its agricultural base as evidence of deeper structural problems.

The minister called on all political parties to sit together until they resolved major national issues. He said new provinces or smaller administrative units could bring public services and justice closer to citizens.

Is Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi hinting at launching his own political party? 🤔

Naqvi also criticised political funding. He said some businesspeople contribute Rs500 million, Rs100 million or Rs50 million to political campaigns before elections. He urged the business community to participate directly in politics and governance reform.

Turning to young people, Naqvi said stipends and tablets could not replace merit-based jobs. Using the term “cockroaches” while referring to youth, he warned that their collective frustration could “turn everything upside down.”

He said young Pakistanis could earn between $2,000 and $4,000 per month if the country provided suitable opportunities and a fair system.

Naqvi said the federal government prepares deficit budgets and continues borrowing without correcting underlying weaknesses. He praised Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for working up to 14 hours a day but said such efforts amounted to only “firefighting” without structural reform.
