The Michael B. Jordan Best Actor Oscar win became one of the biggest moments of the 98th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 15. Jordan, 39, took the prize for Sinners, beating Timothée Chalamet in a race that had become one of the most closely watched contests of the season.
Jordan won for playing identical twins who return to their hometown in the Jim Crow South and confront a supernatural evil. When his name was announced, he appeared visibly emotional as the audience stood and cheered loudly.
In his acceptance speech, Jordan thanked his mother and father, who had flown in from Ghana, as well as his brother and sister. He also praised director Ryan Coogler, calling him an “amazing person” and saying he felt honoured to work with him.

Michael B. Jordan Best Actor Oscar Caps Tight Awards Race
Jordan beat out Chalamet, Leonardo DiCaprio, Wagner Moura and Ethan Hawke for the award. The contest had largely been framed as a two-way race between Jordan and Chalamet throughout awards season.
Jordan picked up two SAG-AFTRA awards, including outstanding performance by a male actor in a leading role. Chalamet, meanwhile, won his first Golden Globe for his role as Marty Supreme and later claimed best actor at the Critics’ Choice Awards.
In the end, Jordan’s momentum carried through to Oscar night. The result gave Sinners another major win and turned his victory into one of the ceremony’s defining moments.
Why Timothée Chalamet’s Loss Drew Attention
Chalamet’s defeat stood out because he had spoken openly about his ambition. During his 2025 SAG-AFTRA speech for A Complete Unknown, he asserted his pursuit of greatness and his ambition to rank among the greats.
However, his campaign also faced controversy. In February, he drew backlash after remarks at a CNN town hall in which he said he had no interest in working in art forms such as ballet or opera, describing them as efforts to keep alive something no one cares about anymore.
The reaction online was swift. Retired ballet star Misty Copeland was among those who criticised the comments, arguing that opera and ballet helped shape the very medium that made Chalamet a movie star.
Still, whether the controversy affected the final result remains unclear. Oscar ballots had already closed before the remarks went viral.
By the end of the ceremony, it was Jordan who walked away with the statue. More importantly, the standing ovation that greeted him captured the mood inside the room.
That response helped underline just how strongly the industry backed his performance in Sinners. On a night full of major moments, this was the one that said the most.
