Meta has launched Meta Muse Image across Instagram, Meta AI and WhatsApp, adding AI image generation and new visual effects for Instagram Stories.
The update includes 30 new Story effects, including a disposable-camera style filter. Meta also added a redesigned image editor that lets users preview effects before applying them.
The rollout has raised privacy concerns because public Instagram accounts are automatically opted in. Users can tag a public Instagram profile in a prompt and use Meta AI to generate an image using that person’s likeness.
Instagram users can disable the setting through the app. They must open Profile, tap Menu, go to Sharing and reuse, and turn off “Allow people to create with and reuse your content” for both posts and reels.
Instagram’s Help Centre says users do not receive notifications when others remix their content through Meta AI. It also says that turning off the setting does not remove AI-generated images that have already been created.

The feature drew criticism on social media, where users objected to default enrolment for public accounts and warned of the potential misuse of their images.
