MIAMI, Florida: Lionel Messi’s career goals reached 930 as his first-half free kick helped Inter Miami CF draw 2-2 with San Diego FC in Major League Soccer on Sunday.
Anders Dreyer gave San Diego the lead in the 12th minute before Messi equalised in the 24th. The Argentine’s free kick was his 20th MLS goal of the 2026 season and his 101st goal for Inter Miami in all competitions.
Luis Suárez put Miami 2-1 ahead in the 74th minute after a move involving Rodrigo De Paul, but Dreyer struck again eight minutes later to secure San Diego a point. Goalkeeper CJ dos Santos made six saves, including two late stops against Messi.
The draw was Inter Miami’s fourth consecutive stalemate in league play and left the defending MLS Cup champions on 46 points with a 12-4-10 record. The match also marked Kily González’s MLS managerial debut with Miami.

— MLS Español (@MLSes) September 20, 2026Messi now leads MLS with 20 goals and 13 assists in 23 regular-season appearances, MLS reports. His latest strike came four days after he scored his 100th Inter Miami goal in the club’s 2-0 Campeones Cup victory over Cruz Azul.

The goal also moved the 39-year-old to 930 official senior goals for club and country, according to current career-goal trackers. Cristiano Ronaldo remains ahead on 979, leaving Ronaldo 21 short and Messi 70 short of 1,000.
Inter Miami next visits Columbus Crew on September 27 at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field in Columbus, Ohio, according to the MLS schedule.
