Mark Carney’s majority government status was cemented after the Liberal Party won key federal by-elections, pushing the governing party past the threshold needed to control the House of Commons.
Recent reporting says Carney’s Liberals secured a parliamentary majority after victories in two Ontario ridings, giving the party enough seats to govern without relying on opposition support. AP reported that Liberal candidates Danielle Martin and Doly Begum won in University–Rosedale and Scarborough Southwest, while Reuters said the result strengthened Carney’s hand as he confronts economic pressure linked to U.S. tariffs.
The Liberals reached 173 seats in the 343-seat House of Commons, surpassing the 172-seat threshold for a majority. Some projections placed the number at 174, depending on final outcomes in a close Quebec race.
AP similarly reported that the Liberals now hold a majority after the special elections, allowing Carney to govern without opposition backing. That gives the prime minister greater room to move legislation and reduces the immediate risk of parliamentary instability.
The two decisive Ontario ridings were University–Rosedale, won by Danielle Martin, and Scarborough Southwest, won by Doly Begum. It adds that Terrebonne, Quebec, remained close as counting or final projections continued.
These results matter because they turned a narrow parliamentary path into a working majority. Reuters said the majority is likely to give Carney political stability for years, while AP described the outcome as a major shift for a prime minister who entered office without prior elected experience.
This majority follows months of defections from opposition parties, including four Conservatives and one NDP member moving to the Liberals. It also says Carney has presented stronger parliamentary control as important for handling economic challenges, especially trade tensions and tariffs linked to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Reuters reported that Carney has argued that a majority would help him deal more effectively with the trade war started by Trump. AP added that the result could allow the Liberals to remain in power until 2029. Analysts say Carney is focusing more heavily on economic resilience, energy exports and reducing dependence on the United States than on the more progressive political agenda associated with Justin Trudeau
