Mark Carney became Canada’s prime minister on March 14, 2025, sworn in by General Mary Simon in Ottawa.

Carney, the former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, won the Liberal Party leadership on Sunday, despite lacking a political background. He expressed his loyalty to King Charles III by taking the oath in both English and French. Now, his economic expertise will be tested amidst tensions between the U.S. and Canada.

“We will never, ever – in any way, shape or form – be part of the United States. America is not Canada.”

In first speech as Canada’s new PM, Mark Carney has rejected US President Donald Trump’s push to annex the country as “crazy”.

Cabinet Reshuffle Plans

Carney will reassign Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc to international trade to address strained ties and elevate Francois-Philippe Champagne to finance. Next week, he’ll visit London and Paris to strengthen European alliances, a key Mark Carney Canada PM strategy.

Replacing Justin Trudeau after nine years, Carney vowed to protect Canadian sovereignty. “I’ll meet Trump only with respect assured,” he said, upholding retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods. Foreign Minister Melanie Joly is working to arrange a Trump-Carney call.
