A man was shot and  injured earlier yesterday as a parking dispute escalated outside a popular tea shop in Karachi’s posh Defence area.

According to eye-witnesses, a brawl broke out when one party refused to remove their car from the parking slot outside Chai Shai. Shots were allegedly fired by a member of an influential family and resulted in a man being shot in the leg.

“A man named Syed Manzoor was injured in a dispute outside a cafe in Saba Avenue, Defence Phase 2. Shots were fired over a parking dispute in which one man was shot. The suspect is on the run and police is searching for him. Both parties knew each other,” confirmed SHO Darakshan.

The injured man was taken to South City Hospital, according to Darakshan Police Station Media Cell.

One eye-witness related the incident saying, “I was at Chai Shai with family and everything was cool. Suddenly, two men from the lane beside had a fight or something and fired two shots and killed one person. Everyone just panicked,” one eye-witness wrote on a Facebook page Halaat Updates. The man was shifted to a nearby hospital.

Soon after the incident, Chai Shai took to Facebook, condenming the incident and clarifying that the dispute “had nothing to do with Chai Shai and Chai Wala”, as many had been speculating.

“What happened today in the lane in between Chai Shai and Chai Wala is condemnable,” the cafe said.

“According to my knowledge they knew each other and only on a parking issue they got into an argument where none of the party involved wanted to back off. That resulted in a heated argument .The person who was shot , survived thank God . We are fully co-operating with police and rangers,” the post read.

Speaking about security arrangements, the open air cafe management said they do not allow people with arms to enter the cafe “but controlling something like this , anywhere is not possible.”

“We apologise that our customers had to go through this while enjoying their time with loved ones and we will revise the security measures on the strip by having a meeting with all chai places owners in the strip.”
