WUHAN: Maja Chwalinska recovered from a set down to beat Sonay Kartal 2–6, 6–4, 6–2 on Sunday and claim her first Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Tour title.
The 25-year-old Pole completed the comeback in two hours and 43 minutes. She won the final five games and saved three break points while serving for the championship.
The result put Chwalinska on course for a career-high ranking of No. 11. She finished 2025 at No. 133 and reached the Roland-Garros final earlier this season.
Chwalinska became the fourth woman since the format’s introduction in 2009 to win her first tour title at a WTA 1000 event. She joined Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu and Victoria Mboko.

“It means a lot. It tastes very sweet,” Chwalinska said after the match. Although she welcomed the victory, she explained that she needed time to absorb the achievement. She credited her continued hard work for the result.
