Lewis Hamilton, the celebrated British Formula 1 driver, aims to join Ferrari for the next phase of his illustrious career despite recently renewing his contract with Mercedes until 2024.

Hamilton’s aspiration to race for Ferrari is driven by a childhood dream of donning their iconic red uniform, signalling a significant shift from his long-standing association with Mercedes, which dates back to 2007.

The prospect of Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is taken seriously, igniting a flurry of discussions and rumours across the Italian media landscape. This situation is made possible by an exit clause in Hamilton’s Mercedes contract, which allows for potential departure under specific conditions despite being extended last August for multiple seasons.

"Anyone on the grid would be lucky to have Lewis as a teammate" 🏎

Despite the well-advanced negotiations, this scenario has paused contract renewal talks with Carlos Sainz. This pause coincided with the announcement of Charles Leclerc’s contract renewal, highlighting the strategic considerations at play within Ferrari’s management. The team’s openness to Hamilton underscores their strategic ambition rather than dissatisfaction with Sainz’s performance.

Hamilton’s interest in Ferrari is not new. He has previously expressed his desire to join the team. He is known to have personal connections with key figures in Ferrari’s leadership, including team principal Fred Vasseur and president John Elkann. These relationships, combined with his proven track record, make the potential of his move a coup for Ferrari.

Ferrari’s potential acquisition of Hamilton is viewed as a monumental event in the sport. It would bring a seven-time world champion to their ranks and serve as a strategic blow to Mercedes by securing one of the sport’s most successful drivers. Ferrari’s interest in Hamilton reflects their long-term planning and ambition to strengthen their championship contention.

Due to these developments, Carlos Sainz faces uncertainty, which once seemed firmly rooted in Ferrari. It appears in flux, with possibilities opening up elsewhere, including a potential move to Audi when they enter Formula 1 in 2026.
