Karachi: Over 1.8 million citizens living in 42 cantonment areas countrywide will exercise their right to vote in order to elect councillors on 199 general seats today.

Local bodies elections are being held today in all cantonment areas across the country after a gap of 17 years.

Over 10,000 polling staff will take part in the electoral process today at 1225 polling stations. Of these polling stations, 130 have been declared highly sensitive and 310 have been declared sensitive.

According to Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), the election of women and reserved seats will be left to the discretion of the councillors.

According to the ECP, over two million white ballot papers have been delivered to the presiding officers. The ballots have been published with only election symbols of the candidates, but no name of  the candidate has been mentioned on it.

According to the ECP notification, 541 candidates hailing from political parties and 610 independent candidates are in the electoral arena of the cantonment boards elections.

The Returning Officers (ROs) have been delegated the powers of the first class magistrate from April 24 to April 26, according to the ECP notification.

The notification regarding the results of polls will be issued on April 28.
