The family of a student who died by suicide at a private university in Lahore met the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations on Saturday, the student’s father, Ali Razzaq.
According to Razzaq, who spoke to the local news channel ARY News, officials from the university administration also appeared before the SSP during the meeting. He said it was agreed that two family representatives would be included on the university’s internal investigation committee. The family is expected to submit the names on Monday.
Razzaq added that the university has sought one week to complete its inquiry. He said the family would approach higher authorities if the findings fail to address their concerns. He also confirmed plans to submit a formal application to the City Capital Police Officer (CCPO).
The family’s lawyer, Nabil Akram, claimed that SSP Operations identified possible negligence by the university. He reiterated that the family would contact senior police officials if the probe lacked transparency.

The victim’s brother, Sohaib Sultan, said the administration had assured a transparent investigation within the given timeframe. He also appealed to Maryam Nawaz to ensure justice.
Earlier, Sohaib Sultan had publicly demanded a fair investigation into the death of his brother, Muhammad Owais Sultan, who died on December 19. He alleged that Owais faced severe mental pressure from faculty members. Owais was warned that he would be barred from examinations for low attendance, despite having paid the full tuition fees. He said his brother repeatedly requested leniency, fearing the loss of his academic semester.
Police reached the scene after the incident and collected initial evidence. However, no criminal case was registered. Ali Razzaq exercised his legal right under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC). Following legal formalities, the body was handed over to the family and later buried in Kamaliya.
University officials and legal advisers have confirmed that a seven-member inquiry committee has been formed. It will examine whether harassment or other factors contributed to the tragedy. Students at the Lahore campus have since staged protests. They are demanding accountability and stronger safeguards to prevent similar incidents.
According to initial reports, on December 19, Owais allegedly jumped from the third floor of the university’s pharmacy building. Fellow students rushed him to the campus hospital. He was then transferred to a general hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later that evening. The university administration has not yet released an official statement, citing the ongoing investigation.
