The International Olympic Committee (IOC) announced on Thursday that boxing has been confirmed for inclusion in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, resolving years of uncertainty about the sport’s future in the Olympics.

Last month, the IOC provisionally recognized World Boxing, which paved the way for boxing approval at the LA 2028 Olympics. “We can expect a great tournament,” said IOC President Thomas Bach.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will oversee boxing at the Paris 2024 Olympics after removing the International Boxing Association (IBA) from its status in 2023 due to issues with governance and finances.

Boxing was initially excluded from the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, but its return was contingent upon replacing the IBA. In response, World Boxing was launched in 2023, bringing together over 80 federations. “This is a great day for boxing worldwide,” said President Boris van der Vorst.

Van der Vorst emphasized the importance of teamwork among federations and leaders. “Being part of the Olympics is a privilege we will uphold,” he stated. Only athletes affiliated with World Boxing federations will be eligible to compete in the 2028 Olympics.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) severed its ties with the International Boxing Association (IBA), led by Russia’s Umar Kremlev, in 2019, which resulted in the IBA being excluded from the Tokyo 2021 Games and beyond. The inclusion of boxing in the LA 2028 Olympics represents a new beginning.
