Following the recent induction of legislators in Punjab and Sindh, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly’s newly elected members are slated for their swearing-in today under the stewardship of Speaker Mushtaq Ghani.
Per the constitutional mandate, the KP Governor has scheduled today’s assembly at 11 am for the members’ oath-taking, alongside the election and swearing-in of the speaker and deputy speaker, as stated in the official announcement.
Today’s session will witness the oath-taking of 113 members elected to general seats within the 145-member assembly, poised to select its chief minister shortly. The assembly includes 30 reserved seats—26 for women and four for minorities—pending notification due to ongoing Election Commission deliberations.
Election postponements affected two general seats due to candidate fatalities.
Post-February eight elections, PTI-endorsed independents, now aligned with the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), have become the predominant party with 90 seats, leading the race to establish the provincial government with Ali Amin Gandapur as the chief ministerial nominee.
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) secured seven seats, trailing behind are the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) with five and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) with four.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-Parliamentarians (PTI-P) and Awami National Party (ANP) captured two and one seats, respectively.
Despite the PML-N’s coalition efforts with the PPP, ANP, and JUI-F for their chief ministerial candidate, the majority-held SIC, essentially PTI-endorsed, is anticipated to propel Gandapur to the chief executive position of the province.
