Korean Air has clinched the prestigious Airline of the Year title for 2025, surpassing former champion Qatar Airways.

According to the annual rankings by AirlineRatings.com, Korean Air’s commitment to passenger comfort, particularly in Economy Class, played a critical role in its rise to the top.

The selection process included a comprehensive evaluation based on traveller feedback, assessments from aviation experts, the breadth and consistency of product offerings, innovation, and the planning of future fleet expansions.

A standout feature of Korean Air, as noted by AirlineRatings.com, is its refusal to compromise on seat space despite industry trends. “Unlike many competitors who have increased seating density, Korean Air has maintained generous seat pitches of 33–34 inches on its wide-body fleets,” commented Sharon Petersen, CEO of AirlineRatings.com.

Furthermore, the airline has resisted the common practice of adding an extra seat per row on 777 aircraft, prioritising comfort over capacity instead. This decision has set Korean Air apart in an era where many airlines are reducing legroom to accommodate more passengers.

The accolade also recognized Korean Air’s extensive in-flight entertainment options, enhanced culinary offerings, and comprehensive amenities on long-haul flights, significantly enhancing the passenger experience.

Additionally, Korean Air’s recent merger with Asiana Airlines—a landmark move in Asian aviation—was a major factor in its top-ranking position, marking the largest consolidation in the region’s aviation history.

Other airlines also featured prominently in the rankings, with Air New Zealand and Cathay Pacific securing the third and fourth spots, respectively. AirlineRatings.com’s top 25 list includes airlines that offer a full suite of services and maintain economy seats with a minimum pitch of 31 inches, ensuring a baseline of comfort for all passengers.
