KARACHI: The University of Karachi has removed Controller of Examinations Dr Yasir following allegations that a scrutiny process changed failed law students’ results during former acting vice chancellor Tufail Jokhio’s tenure.
Associate Professor Dr Syed Ghufran from the Department of Food Science has been appointed to the post.
Yasir denied that the process had resulted in students being passed or failed. He declined to comment further.
ARY News said around 150 students were allegedly declared successful across two subjects. It linked the changes to a written recommendation from the Faculty of Law dean and Jokhio’s approval.
Students from SM Law College and Islamia Law College had initially failed the examinations. The disputed scrutiny took place during Jokhio’s two-month tenure.
Faculty of Law Dean Barrister Sarfraz Mitlo defended the process. He said the university formed the committee with the vice chancellor’s approval because students had been unfairly treated.

Mitlo explained that the university examined the answer scripts again in the presence of both college principals and the examination controller. He maintained that the university had not declared any student with zero marks successful.
Mitlo argued that university rules permitted another examination of the scripts.
That interpretation differs from the recount-only procedure described in the allegations. Under that account, annual-system scrutiny requires individual student applications and permits recounting marks rather than reassessing answers.
Former permanent vice chancellor Dr Khalid Iraqi stopped the process on that basis during his tenure.
The allegations concern changes to Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws examination results. Yasir’s denial and Mitlo’s defence leave the outcome of the scrutiny and its compliance with university rules disputed
