On August 19, 2025, Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab declared a rain emergency in response to heavy showers that began early Tuesday morning, as forecasted by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD). The mayor cancelled all staff leaves, directing personnel to remain on the ground to ensure effective drainage and address public concerns.

Light showers that started Monday night escalated into torrential rain by Tuesday morning, providing relief from humid weather but causing widespread waterlogging. Affected areas include Tariq Road, Azizabad, Shahrah-e-Quaideen, Boat Basin, Liaquatabad, Hassan Square, North Nazimabad, SITE Area, Clifton, Defence, Qayyumabad, Shahrah-e-Faisal, Airport, Quaidabad, Malir, Landhi, and Korangi. The PMD predicts continued heavy rainfall, raising concerns about urban flooding.

Mayor Wahab emphasised swift action, stating, “Strict action will be taken in case of delays in work or public complaints.” He is personally monitoring the situation alongside municipal teams to ensure efficient drainage and minimise disruptions. The mayor’s proactive measures aim to protect residents and infrastructure in Pakistan’s largest city.

Authorities urge residents to avoid flooded roads, secure their homes, and follow PMD updates. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is clearing drainage systems to mitigate waterlogging risks. Emergency response teams, including Rescue 1122, are on standby to assist affected communities.

The rain emergency underscores Karachi’s vulnerability to monsoon flooding, a recurring challenge for the city. With heavy showers expected to persist, coordinated efforts between the municipal government and residents are crucial to managing the crisis and ensuring public safety.
