On July 25, 2025, the Sindh government announced the abolition of parking charges on all roads throughout Karachi’s 25 towns, as stated by the Local Government Department.
The policy, directed by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, ensures that parking in public areas is free, with fees now only applicable in designated plazas and commercial zones. Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab emphasised, “Providing free parking is a top priority.”
The notification prohibits parking fees on 46 primary city roads, with a phased implementation planned for all roads in Karachi. Mayor Wahab stated, “No institution is allowed to collect parking fees on public roads at this time.” Fees are only permitted in designated plazas and commercial plots specified by the council. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) is financially stable, which ensures the sustainability of this policy.

The Local Government Department has launched a campaign to enforce a ban on fee collection, instructing all Town Municipal Corporations to cease fee collection immediately. The notification warned that municipal commissioners could face legal action for failing to comply with the regulations. Additionally, authorities are targeting illegal fee collectors, stating, “Legal action has begun against the parking mafia; violators will not be spared.”
Wahab described the move as “citizen-first,” prioritising public convenience. The policy expands on KMC’s earlier decision to eliminate parking fees, now covering all 25 towns. Residents, previously burdened by arbitrary charges, gain relief, especially in high-traffic areas. Social media on X reflects support, with users posting: “Finally, free parking for Karachiites!”
The initiative aligns with Sindh’s efforts to enhance public services, following economic gains, such as a $2.1 billion current account surplus in FY25. It addresses long-standing complaints about parking mafias, promoting transparency in urban governance.
