KARACHI, Sindh: Independence Day aerial firing killed one woman and injured 94 people, including 17 children, across Karachi, rescue officials said on Friday.

An Edhi Foundation spokesperson confirmed that the injury toll had risen to 94. The wounded were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Civil Hospital Karachi and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for treatment.

Hospital officials said Abbasi Shaheed Hospital received 24 patients, while Jinnah Hospital treated 35. Civil Hospital’s trauma centre received another 26 people injured during the celebrations.

Aerial firing incidents were reported in several areas, including Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Orangi Town and Defence.

Police said they arrested 30 suspects over alleged involvement in celebratory firing across Karachi’s eastern, western and central districts. Officers also recovered various weapons from those detained.

In Gulshan-e-Iqbal, police arrested a security guard and recovered a weapon after accusing him of aerial firing. Two other suspects were detained in Orangi Town and Iqbal Market, according to the SSP West.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that bullets fired into the air can fall back to the ground and cause fatal or serious injuries.

Karachi recorded three deaths and at least 75 injuries from similar Independence Day firing in 2025, while about 95 people were injured during the 2024 celebrations.
