Kaley Cuoco is under fire after revealing her decision to rehome her senior dog, Shirley. The “Big Bang Theory” actor addressed the controversy on Monday via an Instagram video, explaining the circumstances leading up to the dog’s rehoming and subsequent death.
Cuoco shared that conflicts between Shirley and her fiancé Tom Pelphrey’s dog, Blue, forced the difficult decision. “Many of you noticed Shirley’s absence from my posts,” Cuoco stated. “This was because Shirley and Blue started having major fights over the past couple of years.”
She continued, explaining the escalating aggression. “The situation grew so intense that I feared for their safety. Despite my deep love for her, rehoming Shirley became necessary to prevent any serious harm,” said Cuoco.
Cuoco rehomed Shirley with her longtime pet handler, Tony, and his wife, Angie, who had already developed a loving bond with the dog. “It was an excruciating decision, but Tony and Angie loved her dearly,” she expressed.

The announcement sparked a backlash among fans, with many questioning Cuoco’s commitment to her pets. One user criticized, “I thought she was an advocate for abandoned dogs?” Others condemned the choice to prioritize her relationship over her pet, commenting, “There’s not a shot in hell I would give away my dog for any boyfriend. Poor Shirley was never considered family; she was just disposable.”
Another user suggested, “Why didn’t the boyfriend give up his dog? Why didn’t they put both dogs through a training/behavioural program?” Meanwhile, another commenter declared, “I’m utterly disgusted.”
These reactions highlight the strong emotions and differing opinions surrounding Cuoco’s decision, reflecting the complexities of managing pet conflicts in merging households.
