Former NFL defensive end Josh Mauro has died at the age of 35, his family and former teams announced Tuesday.
Mauro’s father, Greg Mauro, confirmed the death on Facebook, writing that the family was grieving with “many tears and broken hearts.”
The cause of death has not been disclosed. Mauro began his NFL career with the Arizona Cardinals in 2014 and played for the team until 2018.
He later played for the New York Giants, Oakland Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars before returning to the Cardinals for his final season in 2021.
Mauro played 80 NFL games, started 40 and recorded five sacks and two forced fumbles. The Cardinals said they were heartbroken and extended condolences to those grieving the loss.
The Raiders also issued a tribute, saying the team’s condolences were with Mauro’s family and friends.
Stanford University remembered Mauro as a 2013 All-Pac-12 honourable mention selection and said he helped the program reach two Rose Bowl Games.
