The Jinnah International Airport runway upgrade has been completed, enabling Karachi’s main airport to accommodate the world’s largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380.
The central runway, designated Runway 25R, was upgraded within the planned 18-month timeline. Following the completion of Runway 07L/25R, its classification has also been enhanced to support wide-body aircraft operations.
With the modernisation of the central runway, the airport is now better equipped to handle large international flights. The upgrade is expected to improve operational efficiency and increase overall capacity.
The improved infrastructure allows smoother operations for long-haul carriers operating wide-body aircraft.
In addition to overflight and landing charges, the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) collects airport charges from departing passengers.
Domestic passengers are charged PKR 600, while international passengers pay PKR 4,600. These charges contribute significantly to PAA’s revenue and are reinvested into infrastructure upgrades and service improvements.

Funds are allocated to terminal expansion, equipment modernisation, and enhancements to passenger services to ensure safety and comfort.
Landing charges are calculated based on an aircraft’s Maximum Takeoff Weight (MTOW). Parking charges are applied per ton, per hour, with the first two hours free for both domestic and international aircraft. There are no separate takeoff charges or double-charge provisions.
The runway upgrade strengthens Karachi’s position as a major aviation hub. By accommodating aircraft such as the Airbus A380, the airport can support higher passenger volumes and long-haul connectivity. As global air travel demand evolves, infrastructure improvements like this play a key role in maintaining competitiveness and safety standards.
