SANTA CRUZ DE TENERIFE: Tenerife forward Jesús de Miguel died on Tuesday morning after suffering a fatal collision during a Spanish second-division match against FC Andorra.
The 30-year-old striker collapsed late in Monday’s fixture following a heavy impact with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono.
Owono ran out of his penalty area in the 96th minute to clear a long ball and struck De Miguel in the chest. The referee showed Owono a red card before suspending the game with the score tied 2-2.
De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest inside the ambulance, and paramedics restored his pulse on the way to hospital. Medical staff treated him at the Nuestra Señora de Candelaria University Hospital, but his condition deteriorated early Tuesday.
“Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, CD Tenerife announces the tragic death of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,” the club stated.
