James Cameron recently reflected on a misstatement regarding the financial expectations of ‘Avatar: The Way of Water.’
Cameron highlighted an oversight despite the film’s success, grossing $2.32 billion worldwide and ranking as the third highest-grossing film ever.
Cameron initially suggested that ‘Avatar 2’ needed to surpass ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ with its $2.069 billion earnings, to be profitable. He has since corrected this claim.
“I was a bit off with that statement,” he admitted, noting that reaching the top ten highest-grossing films would suffice for a profit. This adjustment means ‘Avatar 2’ needed only to exceed $1.515 billion, the earnings of ‘Fast & Furious 7,’ to cover its costs and generate profit.
With ‘Avatar 3′ set for a December 19, 2025, release, Cameron eyes the possibility of having four of the top five highest-grossing films to his name, should the sequel emulate its predecessors’ success.
