LONDON: Author J.K. Rowling said her views on trans activism remain unchanged in a new essay published on Wednesday, six years after she first set out her position publicly.
Rowling posted the more than 2,000-word essay on her website. She said her involvement had become “practical as well as theoretical” since her original 2020 essay. She described what she called the dominant strain of modern trans activism as “elitist to its core”.
Her essay argues that policies based on gender self-identification can conflict with women’s sex-based rights in areas including single-sex spaces, sport and prisons. Critics have described Rowling’s views as anti-trans, a label she rejects.
She also wrote that trans people should not face discrimination in housing or employment and should retain their human rights and personal safety. Rowling said she had received death, rape and torture threats because of her public stance.

Her essay also referred to last year’s UK Supreme Court ruling that the word “woman” in equality legislation refers to biological sex.
The J.K. Rowling Women’s Fund helped finance the feminist group involved in that legal challenge, and Rowling said the fund would continue supporting related court action.

She said she would continue speaking publicly and using her money to support women pursuing legal cases and female-centred services.
