BAGHDAD: Iraq marked the withdrawal of US-led coalition forces on Wednesday with crowds in the capital and military parades in Baghdad and Najaf, while observing Sovereignty Day as a national holiday.
Residents waved Iraqi flags and cheered along Palestine Street during the celebrations. Security forces, meanwhile, staged parades in Baghdad and the southern city of Najaf.
The withdrawal ended the US-led coalition’s current military mission in Iraq. Washington and Baghdad agreed in 2024 on a phased transition that continued through September 2026.
The departure follows years of changing US military involvement in Iraq. American forces first entered during the 2003 invasion, withdrew in 2011 and later returned as part of the international campaign against Islamic State (ISIS).

However, some Iraqis and analysts have raised concerns about security after the coalition exit. They have cited the risk that ISIS remnants could regroup or that Iran-aligned armed groups could gain greater influence.
