TEHRAN: Iran’s Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) secretary, Major General Mohsen Rezaei, said on Tuesday that US President Donald Trump could not decide on Tehran’s conditions for Iran-US talks.
Speaking at a meeting with Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev, Rezaei said Iran had conveyed its demands to Washington.
“Trump is caught in a quagmire where he can neither negotiate nor fight,” he said. Rezaei also accused the United States of resorting to an air siege out of desperation.
He characterised the US and Israeli attacks that began on February 28 as violations of international law. Separately, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Tehran awaited an official American response to its seven-point proposal through Qatari mediators.
Before leaving New York for Tehran on Tuesday, Araghchi explained that the plan focused on conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. However, Iran’s position on its nuclear programme remained unchanged.

He described Tehran’s demands as fair and reasonable and maintained that Iran had presented a clear proposal. During the bilateral meeting, Rezaei offered Iranian help to establish peace in the Caucasus.
But he argued that the United States had no future in the region. Mustafayev, meanwhile, praised Azerbaijan-Iran relations. He denied speculation that Azerbaijan had permitted others to use its territory against Iran.
