AMMAN, Jordan: The Iranian missile attack targeting US forces in Jordan prompted President Donald Trump to promise a forceful response on July 29 after American and Jordanian forces intercepted the barrage.

President Donald Trump of the United States told Fox News that Washington would be “hitting them hard” and that Iran was “going to get a beating.” He did not identify intended targets or announce a timetable, CBS News reported.

The Iranian missile attack began at 5:45 pm EDT on July 28. CENTCOM said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched multiple ballistic missiles and that forces intercepted all of them, according to its official statement.

Jordan’s military separately said its air defences intercepted and destroyed five missiles launched from Iran. Its statement did not report casualties, according to an Associated Press report.

The IRGC claimed it targeted Muwaffaq Salti Air Base and what it described as a US command facility in Jordan. CENTCOM confirmed only that the missiles targeted American forces in the Middle East.

Trump said diplomatic contacts with Iran would continue despite the attack. However, Tehran publicly denied holding direct negotiations and said intermediaries were relaying messages from Washington.

In a separate escalation, US and Saudi aircraft struck militia logistics and weapons sites in Iraq. The Popular Mobilisation Forces said the operation killed at least 20 members and wounded 32.

Trump said Washington coordinated those strikes with Baghdad. However, Iraq’s presidency condemned the operation as an “unacceptable attack” and a violation of Iraqi sovereignty.
