TEHRAN, Iran, Aug. 13: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused France of hypocrisy over human rights and international law.

He made the accusation after Paris joined a multinational statement condemning Iran’s execution of protesters. Araghchi posted his response on X on Thursday.

He called France’s position “blatant and embarrassing” hypocrisy. He said French support for Israel’s Gaza campaign had erased Paris’s moral authority.

He also accused France of supporting what he described as Israeli aggression against Iran. Earlier, France and 31 other countries issued a joint statement on Aug. 12.

Countries like France should stop lecturing the world about “human rights” and international law. The hypocrisy is blatant and embarrassing.

Your backing of Israel’s genocide in Gaza—and aggression against Iran—has destroyed whatever moral high ground you imagined you had.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief also endorsed it. The signatories condemned Iran’s continuing execution of protesters and its wider use of capital punishment.

They said authorities could not justify using the death penalty to silence dissent or intimidate communities. They also urged Tehran to stop executions and release people they said authorities had arbitrarily detained.

The statement also called on Iran to protect freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. However, Araghchi did not address those demands. Instead, he attacked France’s credibility and linked the dispute to French policy toward Israel.

Separately, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot demanded an end to executions. He also called for political prisoners’ release and accountability for officials responsible for repression.
